What damaged my generator?
Here on the Gulf Coast generators are usually sized for cooling loads. This means that your generator will be able to run your house and air conditioner in the case of a power outage during the summer. That's when we experience the majority of our power failures due to hurricanes and violent thunderstorms.
Problems occur when on very rare occasions your power will go out during the winter. When that happens your backup generator is trying to heat your home in addition to running everything else. Often your heater will automatically go into 'emergency heat' mode during an outage. The heat strips required to produce 'emergency heat' in your home unit pull considerably more power than you’re air conditioning ever did during the summer.
This is when we experience what is called OVERLOAD. An overload often causes a generator system fault resulting in a complete shutdown of the unit. If an overloaded generator does NOT shut down it could run in this overloaded condition long enough to cause serious internal damage (the STATOR or ARMATURE can be damaged or detoryed).
Sometimes you are completely unaware that your generator has been damaged until the whole unit fails later during one of your summer power outages.
If this has happened to you HAVE NO FEAR! This is not the end of the line for your generator.
Call Bay Motor Winding and we will rebuild your unit STRONGER and BETTER than when it left the factory. We will use our industry proven method of increasing the operational temperature rating from the generator's original specs. We can also epoxy coat the generator's 'winding' to lock out the moisture that is so problimatic in our tropical environment.
If you are looking to upgrade, most generator manufactures have devised new methods of transferring loads from normal power to emergency power that protect the generator from falling victim to these 'overload' conditions. These new and improved units are available and you can learn more about these units HERE
